Overview
Well-established DC-based nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and support executive leadership with financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, and strategic financial oversight.
Managing a team of 5-6 direct reports (Accounting Manager, 2x Senior Accountant, 2x Staff Accountant, seasonal intern), the incumbent will assist with operational accounting, audit support, financial reporting, and FP&A.
Requirements
• CPA required
• 10+ years of nonprofit controllership leadership experience required
• Public accounting foundation required
• Experience working out of Non-Profit 25+ million revenue size experience at minimum
• Experience managing full-cycle accounting and finance operations required
• Strong leadership experience managing accounting teams required
• Experience overseeing audits, compliance, and financial reporting required
Job Description:
• Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
• Maintain integrity of the chart of accounts and accounting systems in accordance with GAAP and regulatory standards
• Design, implement, and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes and prepare timely financial statements
• Manage annual external audit process and coordinate directly with independent auditors
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local filings, including tax and regulatory reporting requirements
• Oversee employee benefit plan reporting and Form 5500 compliance
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning processes
• Partner with senior leadership to provide financial reporting and operational analysis
• Manage banking relationships and monitor organizational liquidity and cash flow
• Support grant accounting and ensure compliance with donor and funding requirements
• Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment
