About the Opportunity The Software Engineer - Surfaces will be responsible for developing and maintaining the user-facing interfaces, command line tools, and APIs that allow users to launch and manage Vitess and Postgres databases through the organization's central control platform. This role contributes by enhancing the user experience and operational capabilities of the platform, enabling efficient database management at scale. The position offers autonomy to address complex engineering and business challenges while collaborating with design and support teams to improve database developer experiences. Responsibilities Control Plane Development: Develop and maintain the central control plane used for database creation, orchestration, and automated management. Polyglot Engineering: Work fluidly across multiple programming languages and frameworks, including Go, React + TypeScript, and Ruby on Rails. API Design & Documentation: Build, document, and publish robust RESTful APIs tailored for both end-users and internal dashboards. Internal Tooling: Create and optimize internal administrative tools to support core engineering and customer support teams. Platform Accessibility: Enable platform accessibility through modern programmatic interfaces, including custom APIs, Terraform providers, or MCP servers. Autonomous Problem Solving: Independently diagnose and solve technical engineering and abstract business problems with minimal supervision. Requirements Web Engineering Experience: Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience dedicated to web applications. Backend Expertise: Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails backend architecture and development. Frontend Competency: Practical experience with React and TypeScript for building interactive frontend user interfaces. Relational Databases: Familiarity with core relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL. Web Fundamentals: Deep understanding of web fundamentals, including HTTP protocols, secure authentication workflows, and browser APIs. Deployment Techniques: Solid knowledge of feature flags and progressive rollout techniques for safe code deployments. UI Implementation: Practical experience working with modern CSS frameworks like Tailwind CSS or similar utility-first styling libraries. Compensation and Benefits Compensation Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $290,000 USD per year.
