About The Role We are seeking experienced Staff and Principal Engineers who excel in ambiguous environments, thrive on greenfield projects, and possess the technical leadership qualities necessary to serve as both architects and mentors. In this role, you will be instrumental in building the foundational data infrastructure, including large-scale data pipelines, cloud-native data lakes, and AI systems capable of operating across AWS cloud and on-premises environments. As a founding team engineer dedicated to this initiative, you will define the architecture, select the technology stack, and establish engineering standards for a new core capability within the company. Your work will enable AI-driven security capabilities such as network policy analysis, real-time network observability, root cause analysis through AI agents, threat anomaly detection, insider risk monitoring, and securing autonomous AI systems. This role offers the chance to shape the future of AI-powered security solutions, working closely with research and product teams to operationalize machine learning models, and influence the company's technical strategy. Qualifications 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering roles At least 3 years in a senior technical leadership position (Staff, Principal, or Architect level) Hands-on experience building distributed data systems, including streaming, pipelines, ETL, batch, and real-time processing Strong knowledge of cloud-native platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure Proficiency with containerization and orchestration tools like Kubernetes Experience with modern data technologies such as Kafka, Spark/Flink, Elastic Search, Redshift, Delta Lake, and dbt Familiarity with AI/ML production workflows including feature stores, model deployment, and monitoring Proven ability to lead greenfield initiatives, shape architecture, and mentor engineering teams Experience within the security domain, including secure access, threat detection, and anomaly detection Comfortable working in high-growth, ambiguous environments with minimal structure Based in New York City and available to work onsite 3-4 days per week at One Penn Plaza Responsibilities Design and implement scalable data pipelines, event streaming systems, and a centralized data lake to unify security data sources Partner with AI researchers and product teams to operationalize machine learning and AI models on the data platform Make foundational architecture decisions regarding tools, frameworks, and cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability, reliability, and compliance Guide and mentor engineers, especially those newer to modern data engineering and AI practices, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence Translate business goals into technical roadmaps by asking the right questions, identifying gaps, and driving clarity from ambiguity Collaborate closely with the CTO and leadership to align the technical strategy with the company's vision for AI-driven security solutions Benefits Competitive salary, bonus, and equity options 401(k) plan with company match Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance Short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance Flexible time-off policy to promote work-life balance Remote work options with a home office setup stipend Mobile phone stipend for work convenience Certification assistance program to support professional growth Equal Opportunity Appgate is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
