The Identity team owns everything related to user identity — login, passwords, MFA, security questions, and session management — and the Accounts pod is driving the evolution from single-user models to a unified, multi-user and organization-aware platform. You'll architect and deliver the APIs, data models, and backend services that enable seamless, secure, multi-entity account management at Coinbase scale — future-proofing our growth across Consumer, Institutional, and new verticals.</p> <p class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap"><strong>What you’ll be doing:</strong></p> <ul> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Own the design and reliability of business-critical Tier-0/Tier-1 backend systems serving millions of customers, ensuring security, observability, and operational excellence.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Lead the evolution from fragmented user/org models to a unified Account abstraction — defining APIs, data models, and best practices adopted across every Coinbase product.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Architect and deliver platform services enabling seamless, secure, multi-entity account and identity management, making it fast and easy to add new entity types (e.g., org, partner, vertical).</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Champion technical excellence by driving code and design reviews, setting engineering standards, and shaping the team's technical culture.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Mentor and level-up engineers across the team, creating a multiplier effect on developer velocity and platform reliability.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Infrastructure, SRE, and Compliance teams to deliver secure, observable, and extensible solutions.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Proactively identify opportunities for platformization, refactor legacy components, improve performance, and harden security and compliance posture.</li> </ul> <p class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap"><strong>What we look for in you:</strong></p> <ul> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on backend systems.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Proven experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services in a service-oriented architecture.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Track record of writing high-quality, well-tested code that meets customer needs and withstands production demands.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally across product, infrastructure, and compliance teams.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Demonstrates the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality.</li> </ul> <p class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap"><strong>Nice to haves:</strong></p> <ul> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Experience at a company during rapid growth (startup to mid-size scale).</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Familiarity with blockchain technologies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and crypto-forward experience such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, ENS, dApps, or blockchain-based services.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Experience decomposing a large monolith into microservices.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Proficiency with Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, Postgres, MongoDB, or Redshift.</li> <li class="mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap">Background building financial, high-reliability, or security systems.</li> </ul><div class="content-pay-transparency"><div class="pay-input"><div class="description"><p><strong>Pay Transparency Notice:</strong><strong><em> </em></strong>Base salary varies by location (see range below).
